Chatpata Aloo Recipe - The Taste of Spicy Potato

The history of domestication and use of Potato as a food, goes back some 10000 years, with reports of its first cultivation being done in South America, in areas of Peru and Bolivia between 8000 and 5000 BC. However, the food values and taste of Potato soon became well known during the age of discovery and since then it has spread across the world, to be used as a staple food across many countries.

 

In India, the Potatoes were first introduced by the Portuguese in the early 17th century, when it was initially cultivated, along the western coast of the country. It was the British, who introduced the crop to its primary eastern province of – Bengal, where it became famous as – “Aloo”. Soon Aloo would be used in large scale across the country.

Here we are going to discuss Chatpata Aloo Recipe, also known as Chatpata Potato Recipe or Chatpata Baby Potato Recipe, as the preparation should ideally use only – “Baby Potatoes” so that the ideal taste can be experienced to the full extent. This dish not just combines the spicy taste that Indians, like so much, but Chatpata Aloo recipe can also be used by people, who are new to cooking, as it is very easy to make. Not just the ingredients are easily available everywhere but cooking this dish also gives much satisfaction to the chef, especially when they see how satisfied it leaves the people, who eat it. So, for those who are interested, this is how the dish is prepared –

Ingredients Required for Chatpata Potato Recipe

  • Baby Potato – 250 grams (boiled)
  • Coriander Leaves – 25 gm
  • Tomato – 1 (Medium sized)
  • Mint leaves – 25 gm
  • Garlic cloves – 3 in number
  • Oil – 4 Tablespoons
  • Mustard seeds (Raw) – 1/4th teaspoon
  • Turmeric Powder – 2 to 3 gm (less than a 1/4th teaspoon)
  • Chilli Powder – 1/4th teaspoon
  • Ginger Paste – 1 Tablespoon
  • Sesame seed - 1/4th teaspoon
  • Lemon (Only the Juice is needed) – 1 in number
  • Water – ½ Cup
  • Black Salt - 1/4th teaspoon or as per taste

How to make Chatpata Aloo?

  • The potato is half boiled. After peeling them, it is kept aside.

 

  • A paste is made of coriander leaves & mint leaves by grinding them with garlic cloves.

 

  • 4 Tablespoon of Oil (Preferably mustard oil) is put in a pan, which is on a medium flamed oven. After all the oil gets warmed up, 1/4th teaspoon of mustard seeds and 1/4th teaspoon of sesame seeds are put in it. As it starts popping, chopped tomatoes and turmeric powder is added and stirred constantly.

 

  • Next boiled potato is added to it, along with ginger paste and the components are mixed thoroughly. Water is added and allowed to boil. Chili powder & black salt is added next and a lid is put on the pan to cover it. The boiling is continued until everything becomes dry. The oven is switched off.

 

  • A lemon is cut and the juice is squeezed all over the preparation. The paste of coriander and mint leaves is added and components mixed thoroughly by a spoon. Chatpata Aloo is ready for consumption now.
